Why Boxelder Bugs Swarm in the Fall

Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata) are dark brownish-black insects roughly half to three-quarters of an inch long, identified by the reddish-orange stripes behind their heads. They spend spring and summer feeding on the seeds of boxelder trees (Acer negundo), along with certain maple and ash species, using piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract nutrients. Hot, dry summers tend to produce larger populations, which means the fall migration into structures can be more intense following a warm season.

As temperatures cool in autumn, boxelder bugs search for sheltered overwintering sites. They may occasionally fly in through open doors or windows, but more often they work their way inside through cracks and crevices around window frames, door sweeps, and roof soffits, sometimes in significant numbers. Once inside, they go dormant until late winter or early spring, when indoor warmth can rouse them before they’re ready to head back outside.

Hundreds or even thousands may gather on siding, foundation walls, and window trim before working their way inside. Boxelder bugs are considered a harmless nuisance pest. They don’t spread disease and pose no direct threat to people or pets. The frustration is practical: large numbers in living spaces, an unpleasant odor when they’re disturbed or crushed, and faint stains they can leave behind.

If you’re seeing them inside before your scheduled treatment, avoid crushing them. Vacuuming is the better approach since it removes them without triggering the odor or staining.
